Only under the condition of very thin layer thickness, it is possible to infiltrate carbon powder in a vacuum or xenon-methane atmosphere to form the adhesion strength. The use of gas carburizing agent may form a relatively hard titanium carbide hardened layer with good adhesion.

As the layer thickness increases, the titanium carbide layer becomes more brittle and tends to flake off. To avoid the intrusion of carbon inclusions into the titanium carbide layer due to the decomposition of ruthene, a prescribed dose of approximately 2% by volume of ruthene should be used. The additive is gas carburized in an inert gas. Lower surface hardness results when carburizing with methane using propane additives. When using gas carburized propane under the condition of 9000kPa bonding force, although the measured thickness of the hardened layer is very thin, it has good wear resistance. Hydrogen is absorbed under the condition of gas-type carburizing agent, but it must be removed again during vacuum annealing.
