What's the difference between titanium steel, pure titanium and titanium?

The name titanium steel is not a standard academic name, but a commercial name.

The name titanium steel is not a standard academic name, but a commercial name. Because 316L stainless steel corrosion resistance, acid and alkali resistance performance is better than the general stainless steel, the standard grade is 022Cr17Ni12Mo2, mainly contains Cr, Ni, Mo, the number is about the percentage contained.

Thus, titanium steel is not titanium, its main component is still iron. This commercial name is in order to distinguish from other stainless steel when used as accessories, and obtain higher value. In fact, the cost and sweat resistance of 316L stainless steel is better than that of common stainless steel.

And really can be called titanium material, is generally two categories, one is pure titanium, two is titanium alloy.

The highest titanium content is freshly made sponge titanium, made from titanium tetrachloride reduced by magnesium, and it looks like this:

1

Loose and porous, very low strength, can not be used directly as titanium material, is as the most upstream titanium material, after melting, forging, rolling, processing into a variety of shapes of plate, wire, tube and so on.

Sponge titanium is nearly 100% titanium. But titanium is so reactive that it easily reacts with oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, etc. in the air when it comes into contact with it, so 100% purity is almost impossible.

Generally speaking, titanium content is higher than 95%, become industrial pure titanium. Pure titanium is divided into TA1-TA4 according to the difference of titanium content and impurity content. We usually use TA1 and TA2. Impurities are mainly oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, carbon, iron and so on. The higher the titanium content, the softer it is, the lower the strength we're talking about, but the more ductile it is.

Therefore, when we make titanium belt buckles and titanium ornaments, TA1 material will be used where the force is not strong, and TA2 material will be used for shafts and small screws.

When we make pure titanium cups, we can't use TA2. The higher the purity, the better. Especially, the hydrogen content must be low.

Again, titanium alloy, as the name suggests, is titanium and other metals, non-metallic alloy. These metals work with non-metals such as aluminum, molybdenum, vanadium, chromium, iron, zirconium, tin, oxygen, carbon, etc. Titanium alloy is divided into TA, TB and TC series according to the different metallographic structure. I'm not going to go into that here.

Take the most commonly used TC4 titanium alloy for example, its titanium content is 90%, 6% aluminum, 4% vanadium, so it is also called titanium 6 aluminum 4 vanadium.

Take the most commonly used TC4 titanium alloy for example, its titanium content is 90%, 6% aluminum, 4% vanadium, so it is also called titanium 6 aluminum 4 vanadium. TC4 titanium alloy is the world's earliest development, the most widely used titanium alloy, is also the earliest used for medical titanium alloy, its output accounts for about the world's total production of all kinds of titanium alloy products in general above, in the aerospace industry is more than 80%. It has high corrosion resistance, strength is higher than pure titanium, toughness is good, processing and welding is relatively easy, so the comprehensive performance is very excellent, and also like pure titanium is not allergic.

Is pure titanium or titanium alloy better?

This is not conclusive, different materials for different products, generally speaking, excluding shape and other factors, the material cost of titanium is higher than pure titanium. Of course, here the titanium alloy is to the regular grade, is based on titanium to add other metals and non-metals, rather than in other metals to add a little titanium, containing a little titanium as titanium alloy.
